Announcing the latest round of successful artists who applied for ArtHouse Jersey’s Development Grants

Sabine Gilley ‘She Fishes’ short film production

We are delighted to announce the latest round of successful artists who applied for our Development Grants, a quarterly funding initiative which offers financial assistance to support the creation of new work or for the development of an artist’s creative process as they pursue a career in the arts. Among those in this most recent round was a music theatre project, short films, musical EP’s and a sculptural skills development opportunity.

Ant Noel- 'Midnight Joanna' music theatre

Ant Noel is a professional musician with two decades of experience in the creative and educational music industries. He has been awarded funding to support the production of three pilot performances of a new, original work of music theatre titled 'Midnight Joanna'. “As a working musician and composer, producing original material can often be costly and difficult to finance. ArtHouse Jersey's grant enables me to fully realise my ambitious new work of music theatre: 'Midnight Joanna'. The funding allows me to pay participating artists a fair fee and is vital in making the production as professional as possible. Original music is so important to creative thinking and mental happiness and we are lucky to have an organisation that recognises this.”

Samuel Parkes Heinrichs- Documentary short film

Samuel Parkes Heinrichs is a documentary filmmaker completing an MA in filmmaking at HFBK Hamburg. He crafts thought-provoking and atmospheric films through close engagement with communities in varied and international contexts. This new film will explore Jersey's identity, intertwining conceptual narratives with personal experiences. "I am extremely grateful to receive funding from ArtHouse Jersey for this documentary film project. This support will allow us to spend the necessary time in Jersey, enabling us to explore its diverse layers and topographies. With this backing, we can immerse ourselves in the island's unique environment, attempt to explore an alternative history of Jersey, and seek out varied perspectives."

Nicole Sheppard- Copper based sculpture

Nicole Sheppard is a sculpture and time-based artist. Within her work she explores the cross-curricular of art and ecology, specifically the relationship between heritage of land and industry. She has received a grant to produce a new copper based sculpture and undertake one to one tutoring, to learn a new specialist skill. "Receiving an ArtHouse Jersey Development Grant is a fantastic opportunity for me. Enabling me to learn and engage in new skills with one to one tutoring, which I would not otherwise be afforded. I am excited to get started! "

Georgina Sutton and Georgi Mottram- Music production costs

Georgina Sutton and Georgi Mottram are both professional musicians currently performing internationally all over the world. They have been awarded funding towards the music production costs of a classical crossover project. “ArtHouse Jersey have very generously supported the music element of our project which will enable us to create, produce, mix and master three tracks for our Classical Crossover music video. We aim to shoot this in the most stunning locations around Jersey with an innovative sound world to distribute across International Music Agents in order to springboard our career together as an International Duo based in Jersey. We are incredibly grateful for the support from ArtHouse Jersey and we are so excited to see how this could leverage our musical opportunities."

Sabine Gilley- ‘She Fishes’ short film

Sabine Gilley is an aspiring filmmaker beginning her professional career. This short film will showcase a local fisherwoman navigating her way through a male dominated environment. “The synopsis for my short documentary is, ‘A local fisherwoman navigates her way through a male dominated environment to work in an industry that has been essential to island life for hundreds of years’. Thanks to the support of ArtHouse Jersey, myself and my crew have been able to create this film to showcase the struggles and passions of those in the local fishing industry, specifically a fisherwoman. As a 23 year old filmmaker, I am extremely grateful for the support ArtHouse Jersey gives to artists to develop their craft.”

Vivian le Vavasseur- Music EP

Vivian le Vavasseur writes, records and performs experimental pop music as Viv le Vav. The Viv le Vav EP will be recorded in Berlin and released in Jersey with live performances. “I’m very excited to have been offered a Development Grant by ArtHouse Jersey. I’ll be working with producer Drew Deal to create an EP of new work, recording acoustic instruments and voice in an analogue studio. It’s a setup that I’ve been wanting to work with for years: capturing a live performance, in an arrangement true to my raison d’être as a pop singer - songwriter.”

Charlie Cadin- Short film about biodegradable surfboard creation

Charlie Cadin has been awarded funding towards producing a short film about the process of creating biodegradable surfboards. “I am a student and designer from Jersey. I am working on a project making bio based surfboards and the funding from ArtHouse Jersey will be used to go towards the costs of creating a short film”

Rich Allo- UK tour of a new album

Rich Allo is a singer- songwriter of indie and alternative rock music. He has received a grant towards a UK tour in support of a new locally-produced studio album tackling mental health issues for people in their twenties.“The funding received from ArtHouse Jersey will support the development of my project in a number of significant ways. It will amalgamate into enabling the production of a show devoted to spreading awareness about emotional wellbeing.”

Amy Moore- Music EP

Amy Moore has played music locally for twenty years and she has received funding towards the creation of a new music EP. “I am so grateful to ArtHouse Jersey and immensely pleased to be awarded this grant towards my next music project. Having been a strong advocate for music in Jersey for a very long time, I had been aware of the support ArtHouse Jersey was offering but had never thought to apply for myself until now. I have been working very hard to understand the industry and promote my music over the past year since the release of my debut EP last summer. The grant means that I can capitalise on the momentum that I have already built and now get straight back into the studio to create more music to be released. Beyond the financial support, the grant personally provides to me a real confidence boost that an organisation such as ArtHouse Jersey believes in my artistic endeavors. Originating from a small island such as Jersey often brings a lot of its own logistical challenges, however organisations such as ArtHouse Jersey are such a powerful tool in supporting local artists to reach their full potential on a global level.”

For artists interested in applying the guidelines and application form can be found here. Small Development Grants are for awards below £1,500 for which there is a shorter application process and Large Development Grants are for awards between £1,500 and £5,000. Artists of any age, working in any discipline can apply, including performing arts, literary arts, music, visual arts, technical artists and film. The quarterly deadlines are 1 February, 1 May, 1 August and 1 November. Due to the time it takes for applications to be processed, artists should ensure that there is at least three months between the application deadline and when the activity begins.
