Carolyn Rose and Asier Edeso – Chuck And Maxine Learn To Zoom

“We wanted to make a little tongue-in-cheek piece about dating during lockdown.  One couple I know had decided that they were not quite ready to go into quarantine together, so they ended up stuck in different countries and trying to stay connected over Zoom.  They really struggled at first, especially since neither of them are great with technology or time!  There was a lot of, “Are you there?  How about now?  Is this working?  Why can’t I see you?”  In the end they experimented with just leaving a call open all day, which was the inspiration here.

We also found that coordinating even a simple piece of choreography over a Zoom call comes with unexpected challenges.  The music was coming through with a slight delay, so timing was especially tricky.  As dancers are used to working together really closely in the studio, and it is easy to take that for granted.

As someone who has moved around a lot, I am so grateful for the technology that keeps us connected over long distances, especially in these strange times.  But there is no replacement for actually being together with the people you care about, and I am really looking forward to having that back.”

Asier Edeso is a choreographer and dancer from San Sebastián, Spain.  Having worked with Ballet du Rhin and the Scottish Ballet, he is now in his twelfth season with Les Ballets de Monte Carlo in Monaco.

Carolyn Rose is a Jersey-based ex-dancer from Ballet Nacional de Cuba, Les Ballets de Monte Carlo, and the Norwegian National Ballet.  She was born in Vancouver, Canada.
