Sonic artists Samm Anga & Sonia Killmann to perform at ArtHouse Jersey at Capital House
Thursday 15 June, 7-9pm.
We are pleased to announce an evening of music featuring two performances by Scotland based sonic artists Samm Anga and Sonia Killmann, which will take place at ArtHouse Jersey at Capital House on Thursday 15 June, 7-9pm. Samm Anga and Sonia Killman will be in residence at ArtHouse Jersey’s Greve de Lecq Barracks for two weeks in June, developing new work spanning both visual arts and music. For this one night they will both present their work-in-progress to the public.
THE RESIDENCY
The residency has emerged as a result of a partnership between ArtHouse Jersey and Cryptic, an award winning producing arts house based in Glasgow. ArtHouse Jersey is working with Cryptic to enable an ongoing programme of exchange and collaboration between Scottish and Jersey based artists.
Based in Aberdeen, Samm Anga is a sound artist and musician, whose work explores mythology and an interrelation between physical and digital realms. He enjoys using precise sound design to create visceral sonic spaces for live performances. While in Jersey he will be working on his forthcoming live audiovisual project Waxen Figures. This piece deals with the theme of reconnection by exploring the disconnect between older indigenous practices and modern behaviour. Through a combination of dance, textiles, music, and visual glitch, he will attempt to submerge the audience into an aural environment.
Sonia Killmann is a Glasgow-based composer and multimedia artist from Belgium whose work has been exploring the relationship between sound and environment. Her current project Digital Skies explores the phenomenon of light pollution in cities and the crucial need to preserve the environment by de-lighting the sky. Projected onto a giant lampshade, the visuals move between abstract city footage and dream-like images created by an AI. The sounds of the piece support the visuals and create an immersive experience through live saxophone, voice and synth.
Samm Anga said, “Audiences can expect to experience the meeting point between the music I have created, the reactive visuals and the story that the performance tells. The concept and research are rich and connected to longstanding histories. The music incorporates theatrical and film-like sound design, but also musical elements from modern electronic music, such as UK Dubstep, and electronic ambient. The work merges these newer genres with traditional folk music melodies. I hope it will be engaging, insightful, and moving!”
Sonia Killmann said, “I expect to see audiences that like experimental and audiovisual performances, but I also hope to make the piece accessible enough that it can be enjoyed by anyone. The audience should feel engaged and immersed during the performance. Imagine someone playing the saxophone next to a giant lampshade. Then imagine lots of stars and light that burst out of that lampshade. Then imagine being able to dream while being wide awake.”
