Two nights of classic movies & discussion for film lovers

Later this month we will open our Live at the Barracks sessions up to film lovers in Jersey, with two special screenings of classic films at the Greve de Lecq Barracks, hosted by film aficionado Cinestef (Stefan Rousseau).

On Thursday 25 August at 7.30pm guests are invited to watch The Truman Show and Friday 26 August, The Grand Budapest Hotel. Both screenings will be accompanied by a discussion hosted by Cinestef. These evenings aim to offer film lovers the opportunity to discover or rewatch high-quality films from major artistic directors in a sociable environment. The presentation hopes to deliver insight and pointers to help enhance the viewer's overall experience of the film. Tickets are at a suggested price of £10 and are available via Eventbrite here.

CINESTEF

As a child Stefan always liked watching movies, but it was in 1984 when he was 12, that he discovered 2001: A Space Odyssey on a giant screen and his life was changed forever. Hailing from Avignon in the South of France where he would frequently attend the art-house cinema ‘Utopia’, he started skipping school to discover the masterpieces and cult classics of cinema. When he got married, one of their first joint purchases was a projector, as movies were a shared passion. In 2002, they started an independent, non-profit website on cinema in French called Cinetudes. Since then, Stefan has been organising various movie nights in Jersey; Cult Classics Movie Night in Rojo, movie showings for the National Trust for Jersey, Cinema Paradiso at the Savoy Hotel and numerous private events. He went on to produce Cinestudies, a cinema course for adults in Highlands and is currently working on future film related talks for teenagers in the Island.

THE FILMS

Thursday 25 August at 7.30pm: The Truman Show

The Truman Show (1998) was directed by Peter Weir starring Jim Carey. He doesn't know it, but everything in Truman Burbank's (Jim Carrey) life is part of a massive TV set. Executive producer Christof (Ed Harris) orchestrates "The Truman Show," a live broadcast of Truman's every move captured by hidden cameras. Cristof tries to control Truman's mind, even removing his true love, Sylvia (Natascha McElhone), from the show and replacing her with Meryl (Laura Linney). As Truman gradually discovers the truth, however, he must decide whether to act on it.

Friday 26 August at 7.30pm: The Grand Budapest Hotel

The Grand Budapest Hotel is a 2014 comedy-drama film written and directed by Wes Anderson starring  Ralph Fiennes and Tilda Swinton. Set in the 1930s, the Grand Budapest Hotel is a popular European ski resort, presided over by concierge Gustave H. (Ralph Fiennes). Zero, a junior lobby boy, becomes Gustave's friend and protege. Gustave prides himself on providing first-class service to the hotel's guests, including satisfying the sexual needs of the many elderly women who stay there. When one of Gustave's lovers dies mysteriously, Gustave finds himself the recipient of a priceless painting and the chief suspect in her murder.
