ArtHouse Jersey sends Artists to China

ArtHouse Jersey is sending two local artists to China to take part in a prestigious residency project at the internationally renowned Red Gate Gallery in Beijing

Karen Le Roy Harris and Emma Reid, professional artists hailing from Jersey, are participating in the Red Gate Gallery’s residency scheme. The gallery supports artists from all over the world to come and experience China first-hand and develop their artistic practice. Its structured residency scheme offers accommodation, working space, supported networking and opportunities to exhibit as part of its monthly open studio programme. As ArtHouse Jersey grows its own residency offering at its flagship home at the Greve de Lecq Barracks, it is seeking to develop relationships with international partners such as the Red Gate Gallery, providing opportunities for Jersey artists to be supported in projects with Chinese contemporaries.Should funding be available, ArtHouse Jersey hopes to invite Chinese artists to the Island in 2020 to undertake a residency. Work created in Beijing and Jersey as part of these exchanges could then be exhibited in both locations, building meaningful and lasting links between the two countries. The project is funded by the Ministry of External Relations as part of their Bilateral Programme Fund, which aims to develop links with some of the Island’s most important partner jurisdictions. The Chief Minister of Jersey, Senator John Le Fondré, is visiting Beijing this week, and will meet with the two Jersey artists and the Director of the Red Gate Gallery, Brian Wallace, as part of his official visit.

Tom Dingle, Director of ArtHouse Jersey said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for the artists involved but also for Jersey as a whole. As global relations and trade become ever more important, Jersey forming strong cultural links with China will assist with other aspects of our wider relationship. We are delighted to be working with the prestigious Red Gate gallery and supporting Jersey artists to be represented in other parts of the world, as well as hopefully bringing other cultures to reflect on our own home here in the future.”

Chief Minister of Jersey, Senator John Le Fondré, said “It’s a privilege for me to be here, meeting local artists. Jersey continues to enhance our economic, educational and cultural ties throughout the world and art is an exceptional medium to do this.  It is something that transcends borders and can bring people together regardless of their backgrounds, it’s fantastic to see Jersey artists embrace this opportunity and share their talents in this part of the world”.
